Mandelic Acid Peel

Mandelic acid in its natural state is derived from bitter almonds (the name is derived from the German “Mandel” for “almond”). Ultraceuticals uses a 100% synthetic form of Mandelic Acid at 40% strength. It is an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) which helps to efficiently eliminate dead skin cells, with a benefit of a BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) which assists to counteract excess lipids on the skin, unblock pores and activate the skin’s natural regeneration cycle.

What are the benefits of a Mandelic Acid Peel?
Specific programmes are available to improve acne, blotchy hyper-pigmentation including melasma, fine lines and wrinkles. Results are all dependent on client health and homecare usage.

What does Mandelic Acid do to the skin?
Mandelic Acid dissolves the “glue” that holds dead cells to the surface of the skin. It is this layer of dead cells, which gives the complexion a rough, dull appearance with uneven pigmentation. This layer also clogs pores, giving the appearance of coarseness, open pores and a tendency to produce acne. When these dead cells are removed, the underlying layer of fresh new skin is exposed. This layer has a smoother texture and is more even in colour. Pores are refined and the appearance of acne reduced. Mandelic Acid has been known to assist in reducing skin discolouration and hyperpigmentation.

What does the programme involve?
Regular use of homecare which includes products containing Lactic Acid, Salicylic Acid and Vitamin A will accelerate results and is essential to enhance and maintain results.
Much of the improvement in your skin will be achieved by regular daily usage of these products at home. The particular products most suitable for your skin type can be selected with the help of one of our staff members. We can create a long-term regime to keep your skin looking its best.
The Mandelic Acid treatment may cause a slight tingling, or pins and needles feeling in the skin, but no pain. These Clinic treatments should be repeated at regular intervals until the desired improvement has been achieved. The number of treatments required will depend upon the condition of your skin. Young skin may only need an occasional treatment to maintain its youthful freshness, while older, badly sun damaged skin will benefit from an initial course of 6-10 treatments.

What do I look like after a clinic treatment?
These treatments cause minimal irritation or redness. Any minor irritation or flaking is easily covered with make-up. There is usually no obvious peeling of the skin after the treatment. They work by enhancing the skin after the treatment. They work by enhancing the skin’s own regenerative capacity and it is not necessary to see peeling for them to be working. There is usually no disruption to normal work or social commitments.

How do I care for my skin following a Mandelic Acid Peel?
Apply Ultraceuticals barrier repair moisturisers such as Ultra Hydrating Lotion, Ultra Moisturiser Cream or Ultra Rich Moisturiser for the next 5 days following your peel. Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF30+ is essential for use throughout the duration of your treatments. As your skin recovers from the treatment, you can recommence your normal skin care routine. This is usually within the next 5 days.

How long do I have to wait before seeing an improvement in my skin?
Most people begin to feel a softening of their skin within 2-3weeks. However, it may take several months of regular usage to achieve the best results. Improvements can continue to occur in the skin for many months to years.

Are there any side effects of these treatments?
Side effects are generally a result of poor aftercare, using the incorrect products following a treatment, allergies to specific ingredients contained within the peel or picking at the skin following a treatment. These effects are rare.
Mandelic Acid Peels are safe to perform on almost all skin types and are safe to use during pregnancy.
Those who have been on Roaccutane within the last 6 months, or have been using Retin A regularly, and those prone to cold sores, should discuss these particular situations with the technician prior to commencing the programme.
